The Wake: London’s wealth was built on the labour of enslaved Africans, yet there are few memorials that focus on those that were enslaved. Public memorials typically commemorate enslavers or focus on abolitionists. We’re working with City Hall, Khaleb Brooks, YAA Projects, wider stakeholders and local communities to redress the balance with a memorial in London’s Docklands.

Returning Humanity: Canning Dock shaped Liverpool as a vibrant economic port, but its success was built on the transatlantic slave trade: the violent removal, commodification and murder of people. We shouldn’t sanitise or override history with redevelopment. By letting marginalised communities and people of colour set the agenda, we can develop frameworks for conversations about the past and future. Careful handling of contentious stories puts power back into the hands of those who suffered, and continue to suffer, with the legacy of slavery.

Garden of Curiosities: The British Museum is rooted in colonialism. Reinstating the historic gardens as an outside room of archaeology and anticipation provides a necessary prelude to this temple of 2m years of human history. Through an immersive object trail, we foreground challenging and undertold stories from quiet corners of the museum, allowing visitors to see the collection in a new light before entering.
